Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has told candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that political power is not handed on a platter.
The minister spoke during the 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP on Tuesday at Wadata house, the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
I used the opportunity to urge candidates of the party, especially those running for governorship, to brace up for keen contests,” Wike said.
For me, nobody gives power, and nobody will dash anyone power. Whoever that is seeking power must be ready to struggle for it.
“For instance, I am from a background where I never got anything on a platter of gold.
“When I contested for ordinary local government chairmanship position, the matter went all the way to the Supreme Court.”
Wike’s comments come just days after the PDP described him as its “finest political talent” and said there were no plans to allow him join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
On Monday, Nentawe Yilwatda, the national chairman of the APC, said he wished he could poach Wike from the PDP.
Yilwatda, who spoke during the flag-off of the construction of road projects in Abuja, commended Wike’s performance as FCT minister, describing him as hardworking and tireless.
But in a statement issued on Wednesday, Jungudo Mohammed, the national publicity secretary of Wike’s faction of the PDP, said the minister’s role in the President Bola Tinubu administration should be seen only as a temporary arrangement.
He said the PDP has no intention of relinquishing one of its “finest political talents” regardless of any overtures from the ruling party.
