The independent ministerial committee investigating the recent deaths of 33 persons in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Minna, Niger State, has established the causes of the deaths of the suspects. The chairman of the committee, Jonathan Kure, while presenting the report of the investigation to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Tuesday, identified the causes of death to include “overcrowding, unsuitable detention condition, failure of duty of care, inadequate supervision”. Two people have died as a result of disagreement that erupted over money sharing formular on Monday. Trouble started when two suspected area boys engaged each other in a hot argument over how to share money given to them at Ogunpa area of Ibadan. It was learnt that the two stabbed themselves in the process. One of the two victims stabbed his colleague in the right wrist. The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has disclosed that 653 suspects have been convicted in the ongoing 11th phase of the mass terrorism trials at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Fagbemi, who gave the update while reviewing the progress of the trials on Friday, said 1,060 suspects were brought before the courts for the exercise, which is the third phase conducted this year. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has granted JP Morgan approval-in-principle to establish a merchant bank in Nigeria after receiving a deposit of $38 million. CBN made this disclosure in a statement on Friday. The apex bank said the proposed lender, to be known as JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited, will be required to obtain a final banking licence before commencing operations. JP Morgan made a $38 million deposit to CBN for its banking licence.
