Gumi Explains Differences Between Political Praise Singers and Politicians

Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has weighed in on the ongoing debate over whether Islamic clerics should actively participate in politics or remain devoted only to religious preachings.

The discussion has gained traction following the active involvement of some clerics in politics, a development that has continued to divide opinion among Muslims, particularly in northern Nigeria.

Notable among Islamic scholars who joined politics and declared interest to contest election are the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Sheiykh Isah Ali Ibrahim Pantami and the Sokoto-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani, who, in February 2026, declared his interest to run for the governorship seat in the upcoming 2027 general election.

There are also other clerics of reputable standing who occupied (and others still occupying) different political positions in some states.

While critics of the idea of clerics joining politics argue that the arena is too dirty and divisive for religious leaders, supporters insist that scholars should not stand aloof while the country grapples with poor leadership by incompetent persons.

Those opposed to the idea say partisan politics exposes scholars to ridicule, insults, political attacks and even defamation, which, according to them, could diminish the respect and moral authority they command within the society.

To them, clerics are better placed to provide spiritual guidance, offer counseling when needed and hold leaders accountable but from outside government.

Supporters, however, argue that meaningful change cannot come from the outside alone, and that responsible people should also join and give in their best in changing the affairs of the nation.

They maintain that if scholars possess the knowledge, integrity and competence to lead, they should be allowed to seek elective offices and contribute their quota directly rather than limiting themselves only to sermons and prayers.

The debate has gained fresh attention with the emergence of former Minister Pantami as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Gombe State.

Weighing in on the issue, Gumi, in a post on his Facebook page on Monday, maintained that there is nothing wrong with religious scholars joining and participating actively in politics.

According to him, it is even better for clerics to join politics than just pray for the politicians from the outside.

“A religious scholar who gets involved in politics and bears its rigours is better than one who sits on a prayer mat, offering prayers for politicians.” Gumi wrote.
