Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, has expressed concern over the treatment of Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa, accusing South African authorities of failing to adequately protect them from harassment and intimidation.

Speaking on the growing concerns over attacks and alleged harassment targeting Nigerians in South Africa, Ojukwu said the situation was particularly troubling given the cordial business environment enjoyed by South African companies operating in Nigeria.

According to the minister, several South African businesses have established and expanded their operations across Nigeria without facing hostility or discrimination from local communities.

“South African businesses are operating in Nigeria and no one is harassing them. Why are Nigerians being harassed in South Africa?” Ojukwu asked.

She further expressed disappointment with what she described as the response of South African authorities to incidents involving Nigerians, alleging that security agencies often fail to take sufficient action when such cases occur.

The minister stated that the Nigerian government expects equal treatment, protection and respect for its citizens residing abroad, particularly in countries that maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties with Nigeria.

Her comments come amid renewed concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa, where reports of attacks, intimidation and anti-immigrant sentiments have periodically strained relations between the two African nations.

Nigeria and South Africa remain two of Africa’s largest economies and maintain extensive trade, investment and diplomatic relations. However, issues surrounding the treatment of foreign nationals have occasionally generated tensions between both countries.

Ojukwu stressed the need for stronger cooperation between the two governments to ensure the protection of citizens and businesses operating within their respective territories.

As of the time of reporting, South African authorities had not publicly responded to the minister’s remarks.

African News Digest will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on diplomatic engagements and measures aimed at addressing concerns affecting Nigerians in South Africa.
