Workers at the Edo house of assembly on Wednesday protested an alleged plan by lawmakers to repeal the legislative and judicial financial autonomy laws.
The judiciary’s financial autonomy and the house of assembly’s funds management laws, which came into effect in 2023, guarantee direct fiscal independence for the two arms of government.
The Edo state house of assembly has been at the centre of unfolding events since the turn of the week.
On Monday, Yekini Idiaye, member representing Akoko-Edo constituency I, was elected as the new speaker of the Edo state house of assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku, who stepped down over an alleged plot to impeach him.
The house subsequently set up a committee to investigate Agbebaku over allegations of financial impropriety, inflated procurement costs for official vehicles, poor leadership, and prolonged and unexplained legislative adjournments.
Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo, would later urge members of the state house of assembly to set aside their personal differences and resolve their lingering disagreements in the interest of the state.
