Seven people have been arrested in Ghana for allegedly using banknotes to make money bouquets.
The seven suspects are expected to face prosecution and could be fined or jailed if convicted. The use of banknotes arranged like flowers is a popular way of presenting cash as gifts at celebrations in Ghana.
According to Ghana’s central bank, it is illegal to use the national currency — the cedi — for bouquets, money cakes, and other decorations. Spraying or scattering money at celebrations, as well as tearing, stepping on, or staining, or deliberately damaging coins is also illegal.
The Bank of Ghana says it is working with police to enforce the rules and protect the currency. Cash gift bouquets are popular but illegal in places like Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe too.
