The construction of the new United States Consulate General in Lagos has injected more than $95 million into the local economy, while providing training and employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerian workers.

The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos marked a major milestone in the project on October 6 with a Topping Off Ceremony at Eko Atlantic City, celebrating the completion of the highest structural point of the 10-storey Chancery building.

The project, according to the U.S. government, has contributed more than $95 million through payments to employees, subcontractors and suppliers across Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria.

More than 1,500 Nigerian workers have also received training to international construction standards through the project, enhancing their skills and competitiveness in the labour market beyond the completion of the facility.

The construction is currently being managed by 120 Nigerian engineers, architects and administrators, working alongside 43 American construction professionals.

Speaking at the ceremony, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Public Diplomacy, Richard Michaels, said the new compound represents the importance the United States places on its relationship with Nigeria.

“This New Consulate Compound reflects cutting-edge construction and engineering techniques, built to the highest U.S. standards for design and construction, and standing as a lasting symbol of what our two nations can achieve together,” Michaels said.

He added that the project demonstrates America’s investment in Nigeria’s future, noting that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, is strategically positioned to promote greater commercial ties and shared prosperity between the two countries.

U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth hosted Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior Nigerian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, representatives of U.S. companies and Nigerian alumni of U.S. government exchange programmes at the ceremony.

They participated in the ceremonial pouring of the final bucket of structural concrete onto the roof of the Chancery.

“That is what we are building here at Eko Atlantic City. Not just a building, but the foundation for the next chapter of our partnership,” Hudspeth said.

The topping-off ceremony is a traditional construction milestone marking the completion of a building’s core structure. The event also recognised four years of work and collaboration on the project, which is now moving closer to completion.

Located on a 12.2-acre (4.94-hectare) site in Eko Atlantic City, the new diplomatic campus will include the Chancery, multipurpose rooms for public events and a new American Center.

The American Center will serve as a venue for programmes highlighting American culture and strengthening people-to-people ties between the United States and Nigeria.

The facility was designed by Ennead Architects, a New York-based firm, and is being constructed by Pernix International, an Illinois-based company.

The U.S. government said the project is intended not only to provide a modern diplomatic facility but also to deepen economic, professional and people-to-people connections between the United States and Nigeria.
